Flush had a series of tapes recorded in the mid-80s labeled simply with a number. This one is number 38 in that set. Early on in side A starts a wicked sampler-based mix by Jeff Mills featuring LL, the B Boys, heavy UTFO/Big Beat breaks, Run-DMC, and more. It’s super dope and I can imagine going nuts for this back in ’85. This mix is one of the best things I’ve found on the Flush tapes so far. Most of these recordings likely came from Power 99 or WDAS in Philly and feature early hip-hop.

Flush had a series of tapes recorded in the mid-80s labeled simply with a number. This one is number 39 in that set. Lots of dopeness here, including a live L.L. set (not sure where it's from). Also digging Pretty Ricky & Boo Ski's "It's Mine" (obviously, an answer record to T La Rock's "It's Yours"). Most of these recordings likely came from Power 99 or WDAS in Philly and feature early hip-hop.

What do we have here then? Oh just some insanely early WKCR action from back when the show was in it's infant stages and Stretch was still going by the name of DJ Skinny Bones... (quality isn't great for the first few minutes but settles down by the time the music starts) Although tons of tapes from the duo's 8 year run have been posted online these sessions from 1990 have proved hard to come by. Even Stretch and Bob themselves have been asking for them, so this was quite a find.  Shout out to...

During the second half of my freshman year at Mary Washington, I started a show called The Jazz Corner . It aired on 540 AM, WMWC on Mondays from 6-8pm. It continued on into my sophomore year when it expanded to a three-hour show and then into my junior year where it was a one-hour set in the midst of a three-hour show. This is the first episode of The Jazz Corner . While I was still very green when it came to jazz, it's interesting to listen back to myself learning about jazz as I played it on...

The tracklist for this isn't entirely dissimilar to this one that I posted last month so it's fair to say it's from the week before or after. Decided to post it up anyway because Tim goes into the Capital Rap Show archives not once but twice and pulls out an old Cash Money & Marvelous session and a freestyle by Chill Rob G, Queen Latifah and the Jungle Brothers, both of which I assume are from the late 80s or possibly 1990 in the case of the latter ( which I posted on its own years ago )....

Since Flush was so influential in the forming of my early music tastes, anytime he'd pass off a new mixtape to me, I'd give it heavy rotation status even if it was music outside of what I normally listened to. This time he gave me in the fall of 1991, in a period when he was DJing regularly at Polo Bay (Margate, NJ) or Crazy Jane's (Somers Point, NJ). He wasn't spinning too much hip-hop at that point, so this mixtape is a blend of house, club, and that subgenre that seemed to only exist in...

This is one of DJ Chris Nathan's (active on Eclipse from 1990-present) first shows ever. At the time the show had a bit of a "quiet storm" format, on top of that in this region in 1990 people were still very opposed to hip-hop so it had to be kept under the radar. You'll hear Chris start to play some rap after about 30 minutes. It's a great time capsule into what was going on at the time and it marks the change of the guard with DJ Chris Nathan being introduced who would eventually...

And so we have the first appearance on OB4ZL for Dave Pearce's rap show on Greater London Radio. Most people in the UK are familiar with Dave as he spent the latter part of the 90s and early 00s doing big things on the dance music side of things having moved to Radio 1 from Kiss FM. Prior to that his voice was immortalized on Public Enemy's It Takes A Nation Of Millions... - that's him on the album's intro introducing them at the Hammersmith Odeon - which is quite impressive in itself, but he...

A 24-minute Roxanne mix that aired on Power 99 (WUSL) in Philadelphia. Excellent for its simplicity -- from the basic scratches over the dub version of Sparky D's "Sparky's Turn (Roxanne You're Through)," to the heavily echoed Lady B "oh my goodness!" at the end of "The Real Roxanne," to the dope electro-tinged "Do the Roxanne (Dance)" by Dr. Rocx & Co.. It closes out with a super-rare live Disco C Roxanne rhyme over Sparky D's instrumental....

As you may remember,  Big Tim got shot back in '99 *. The full story behind it was never made public but general consensus seems to be that some gangster types wanted to do some business with him (promoting a show, running security or whatever) and didn't react well when he refused. As a result he couldn't present his show the following weekend so Funkmaster Flex steps up and covers for 3 hours, albeit with no talking just music. This tape (only 40 mins long unfortunately) is one of my favourites for the following reasons: E Rule's 'Listen Up'. Evil Dee cutting up Zhane & Blackgirl acapellas over Gang Starr and Wu Tang beats and scratching his name check on 'Crooklyn'. It's got the world premier of Black Moon's 'Murder MCs', straight off the DAT from D&D studios. Buckshot drops a freestyle over the 'Kaught In Da Ak' instrumental. The phoned-in shout-outs give it an authentic mid-90s NYC feel and I like that sort...

If you are from outside of the UK, this may be the first time youve heard of the UK Fresh 86 shows. These were at Wembley Arena [NB: ARENA Rap in the UK in 1986] and were billed as 'The event of the decade'. Following the Fresh Fest template on offer in the US from the previous year, and with only 16000 people witnessing what became a pivotal performance of iconic 80s artists, this has arguably become the largest and most important LIVE event in old school UK Hip Hop history, and was part of...

I've had this on the hard drive for a while after Mat sent it to me a few years back. It was labelled as a Scratch Perverts mix but the intro makes it clear its Mr Thing on the set, although maybe another SP member joins in later. There's a couple of occasions on this mix where Thing does his 'switch into a track that references/samples the one that's playing' trick. On this occasion it's The Biznizz into Resurrection and Shadowboxing into You Know My Steez. Neither of these trump my personal...

Side A is 45 minutes of the late DJ Swing of London's Boogie Bunch in the mix on Choice FM back in 1995. He kicks things off with some classic Juice Crew/Cold Chillin selection and then runs through some newer Hip Hop and R&B jams... On side B you get some 2Pac, Mad Skillz, Cypress Hill, Monica, SWV and more... Swing sadly passed away in 2006. There's a good write up on him here . - DJ Step One

Another tape of mid-80s hip-hop and electro recorded from Philadelphia radio (including Power 99's Street Beat show) by DJ Flush. Side B has a great Run-DMC drop for Power 99 where they rework a portion of "Here We Go." Interestingly, I have this exact blend of the drop into "Here We Go" on a tape I made back when I was ten. Kind of funny to come across it on my cousin's tape.

No date on this tape but I'm going with early 1994 (could be late '93 though). Ladbroke Grove's Cash Crew are in the studio plus there's tunes by MOP, Wu Tang, Gang Starr and Big Daddy Kane. Jay The Sultan checks in from NYC for the rap report and drops a sneaky snippet of 'Life's A Bitch' over the phone and there's a some classics by EPMD, Ultimate Force and Eric B & Rakim. Lovely. - DJ Step One

This tape is one that I grew up listening to every year at Christmas. My parents never purchased much music, so this recording they made from the radio (WWSH-FM in Philadelphia) in 1974 was what got rotation every year in our house. In fact, it still does. Even though the music is generally pretty basic background orchestral Christmas music, there’s still something about it I love. The memories it evokes, I guess. My favorite part, for sure, comes on side 2 at 10 minutes in. There’s a radio...

I got the original tape from Grime & Lime.  Having hit up Mr Thing on twitter he mentioned that TRC was the graf crew that First Rate (one of the 3 DJs on this show) was down with. First outing on OB4ZL for Hank Love and Half Pint's show. These guys were on air around the same time as Stretch and Bobbito but weren't quite as well known so tapes of the show are a bit harder to come by. Nes at Dirty Waters has a little bit more info on them here . Judging by this 36 minutes clip, they very much repped for the underground. They've got someone called Automatik in the studio for an interview. I'd never heard of him but he seems to be responsible for one of those indie...

Interesting one this. Guru being interviewed over the phone on a small community station out in Tuscon, Arizona . "You Know My Steez" had just come out and Moment Of Truth was being finished up for release in March '98. He mentions that they were trying to get Busta Rhymes on the remix for Steez but ended up going with Kurupt (probably for the better imo). He also offers up an acapella rhyme but unfortunately the dude in the studio leaves a beat playing so it ends up sounding a bit...

Bobbito & Lord Sear's CM Famalam Show on WKCR from January '99. The tape is a bit stretched (no pun intended) on this one which is a shame as it makes any tracks with pianos and strings - of which there are several - sound a bit off key. The recording was pretty bass heavy so I've done what I could to straighten it out. Minor issues aside it's decent enough to warrant posting. Enjoy. - DJ Step One

DJ 279 has been holding it down on the radio since the early 90s. Unfortunately while Westwood was broadcasting nationally and Kiss FM covered London and the surrounding counties, picking up Choice FM was pretty much impossible if you were off the tube map. As a result, tapes of The Numberman's Friday Night Flava shows are harder to come by than those of his competition (I've been asking around for a while now). Fortunately that man Mr Lawson has come through with a show from June 1993. - DJ...

Red Alert gets busy live on NYC radio in November 1992. Lots of treats on this plus a couple of songs I didn't recognise - can anyone ID the 'Give Me The Night' sampling track on side A? I knew this was gonna be a good when the adverts at the start included a St Ides commercial by Willie D. That was (surprisingly) followed by Red dropping 'Secrets (Of Success)' by the UK's own Cookie Crew and then into some Ice Cube, Nice & Smooth and Brand Nubian. On side B you'll find Scarface, Gang...

I've only ever had a couple of Wake Up Show tapes in my possession so was happy to see this one in the last batch of cassettes that Tobes hooked me up with. I was particularly pleased to find this treat on there though: Guru stops by the show to do a quick interview (just before Moment Of Truth came out) and then drops a few verses alongside a relatively unknown Eminem, before Defari steps up to the mic and then the Beatnuts get involved. Good times. Do things like this still happen anywhere...
